What Recalls Require!
Recalls are governed by Article XIII, Section 12 of the Wisconsin Constitution. A recall petition may be filed after the completion of the elected official’s first year of office, but only one recall petition may be filed against any official during the same term of office. Wisconsin , unlike a number of other states, allows for the recall of most elected officials, including the governor. Although a recall petition for a city, village, town, or school district officer must contain a statement of the reason for the recall related to that official’s responsibilities, no reason need be provided for other officials.
To be successful, the recall petition for the governor must have valid signatures of qualified electors equaling at least 25 percent of the total vote cast for the office of governor in the last preceding election and those signatures must all be gathered within a 60-day period. 2,160,832 votes were cast in the 2010 gubernatorial election; a successful recall petition would need 540,208 valid signatures.
